Data on mammals is noted during counts of breeding birds in Sovon Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology BMP plots. The breeding bird protocol for fieldwork can therefore be used for this data. This concerns easily observable mammals. Additional evidence is required when species are observed that are harder to identify. All observations that follow this method are validated. The maximum population sizes observed are used to calculate trends and indexes, in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands. Finally, the Dutch Mammal Society combines the data with individual observations. The validation protocol for individual observations is used for the total Dutch Mammal Society data set.
