VPRS 8086 Card Register to Criminal Trial Briefs

Until 1961, file numbers were allocated from VPRS 3524 Criminal Trial Brief Register II, a microfiche copy of which has been created for reference purposes. Use of the register was discontinued at the start of 1962 in favour of this card system in which a separate card was generated for each individual file.In addition to recording the file number, each card records essentially the same information found in the entries of the previous register. Details recorded include the name of defendant(s), dates, locations, charges faced and pleas given at the committal hearing and resultant trial and, if applicable, trial verdict and sentence.The cards comprising this series are arranged in file number order. The file number consists of an annual single number in which each file is numbered sequentially within each year: thus the first file created in 1962 is numbered 1962/1. During the life of this series, however, all files relating to incomplete cases were allocated a new number at the start of a new calendar year.
