Nutrient and carbon circularity in peri-urban and urban agriculture: A database of the current state in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and across European cities

The objective of this database is to provide a compilation of the current practices and emerging trends in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) and across European cities along the following themes: 1) Peri-urban and urban agriculture (UA), 2) Biowaste and wastewater management, 3) Linear and circular fertilization, 4) Preservation and regeneration of UA soil, and 5) Stakeholders, policies, and engagement. This database enables a systematic assessment of nutrient and carbon circularity between UA and urban residues in each city, and can be used by various stakeholders in the nutrient cycle (i.e., local farmers, waste management agents, public administration) to facilitate the identification of key drivers and barriers to promote UA and nutrient and carbon circularity. The compilation of this database is based on the results of research and stakeholders engagement throughout the Proof-of Concept project “Healthy Soil for Urban Agriculture through Nutrient and Carbon Circularity” (NUTRISOIL) funded by the European Research Council (Horizon Europe, Ref: 101138151, urbag.eu/nutrisoil/). This document presents a preliminary version of the results obtained so far within ongoing compilation and analysis. The database remains in progress and will be further developed to complete the remaining criteria and expanded to incorporate additional cities. Upon completion and validation, the final output will be made available online as an interactive Excel-based tool to facilitate dissemination and practical use.
