Botrytis paeoniae is a host-specific plant pathogen of peony (Paeonia spp.). The presence of the pathogen in recently-planted, isolated peony production fields begs the question of its origin as it has no known alternative hosts in the area. Whole-genome sequencing was carried out for the purpose of discovery of informative microsatellite markers for use in a population genetics study of B. paeoniae to search for evidence of pathogen migration. B. paeoniae is closely related to B. cinerea, an important model organism for plant necrotrophic fungi, therefore this genome may provide a useful comparison to the already-sequenced B. cinerea.
