NRS-12887 | Registers of correspondence received [Department of Railways]

These registers are divided into the following categories of correspondence: Loco and Permanent Way, 1896-1935; Traffic, 1896-1935; Miscellaneous, 1896-1936; Railways (Departmental correspondence) 1901 and 1909; Estate Agent, 1904-1913 (incomplete); and Staff, 1916-1935. There is a register for each of these categories and they mainly cover correspondence received during one year. The registers record: progressive correspondence number; papers; date of letter; date of registration; from whom; residence; nature of communication; to whom and when referred; and decision or remarks or results. These volumes are arranged alphabetically by subject of the letter and there is an index to subject headings at the front of each alphabetical section. The index gives a brief summary of the correspondence and usually the letter number and the page reference (eg. 1606.78, 1606 is the registered number, and 78 is usually the page number), although sometimes only the page number is given. Blocks of numbers are allocated to subject headings (eg. in volume 4/9019 the subject Claims is allocated nos. 1651-1700, and Complaints is allocated nos. 1701-1800).
