Championships of Standstill (University of Oslo)

This is an umbrella record for the Championship of Standstill, a recurring public experiment held at the University of Oslo between 2012 and 2024. Members of the public were asked to stand as still as they possibly could, in groups, while listening to silence interleaved with music and other sound stimuli, and the stillest won. This deposit holds no motion capture of its own: each of the seven editions is deposited separately, is self-contained, and can be cited and versioned on its own. The seven editions span March 2012, March 2015, March 2017, March 2018, March 2019, May 2022 and April 2024, and about 735 people in total. Six editions were recorded optically, with Qualisys and OptiTrack infrared systems at rates from 100 to 200 Hz; the 2024 edition used body-worn accelerometers instead. Each child record gives its own participant count and the screening applied to it. What the task was, and why it constrains comparison. This is a competition to be as still as possible, which is not the same task as standing still without instruction, and a quantity of motion is only comparable within one task. A figure from a competition reads lower partly because the people were trying. The harmonised layer of the Oslo Standstill Database carries a task class for this reason. Reading a marker. Every edition carries a participant-marker key linking a trajectory in a motion-capture file to a row in the questionnaire. Read markers by name against that key and never by column position: marker sets differ between files within an edition. A marker label is not a person, and the same label in two groups is two different people. The editions. Each is a separate record with its own DOI. 2012 (NM2012) — the first, 76 participants, Qualisys optical. 2015 (NM2015) — 108 participants, Qualisys optical. 2017 (NM2017) — 71 participants, Qualisys optical. 2018 (NM2018) — 110 participants, Qualisys optical, and the edition that also recorded static reference markers. 2019 (NM2019) — 116 participants, and the one edition captured with OptiTrack rather than Qualisys. 2022 (EM2022) — 167 participants, Qualisys optical, the largest edition. Held at the EARMA conference in Oslo and not yet published; it will appear at 10.5281/zenodo.21827113. 2024 (NM2024) — 56 participants, and the only edition measured with body-worn accelerometers rather than optically.
