This study employed complementary neutron diffraction, magnetic and torque measurements to determine the full magnetic phase diagram of CrPS4 crystals. CrPS4 exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state (Type A) formed by out-of-plane ferromagnetic monolayers along the c-axis and interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling below the Néel temperature TN = 38 K. Owing to the small magnetic anisotropy energy and weak interlayer coupling, CrPS4 features low-field metamagnetic transitions: a spin rotation at ~0.7 T and a spin-flip transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase under a relatively low field of 8 T. Intriguingly, due to the inherent in-plane lattice anisotropy, the spin-flip transition under H∥c in CrPS4 induces magnetic moments parallel to the c-axis to align parallel to the quasi-1D chains of CrS6 octahedra. The unique metamagnetic transitions and in-plane anisotropy make few-layer CrPS4 flakes an intriguing platform for investigating two-dimensional (2D) magnetism and exploring prototype device applications in spintronics and optoelectronics.
