VPRS 8899 File Registration Cards, Multiple Number Sequence

This series consists of blue file registration cards which were part of the multiple number filing system that was in use from 1971 to 1987. This series was created by the State Electricity of Victoria (SECV) VA 1002 to register the files created under the Multiple Number Filing System. A card was raised for each secondary heading. All files created under each secondary heading are listed on the one card. Cards may have entries on both sides and, if a card was filled up, a new card continuing the registrations, was employed.The information recorded on the cards included:Primary Headings and primary number;Secondary heading and secondary number;Tertiary Number;Date file opened; andFile title.Tertiary numbers were allocated to new files at the time of registration of the file. The next available number in sequence on a particular card was used as the tertiary number for the newly registered file. The complete file number had three parts derived from the primary and secondary heading numbers with the tertiary number being the third element.Cards have entries on both sides and, when a card was filled, a new card was added with the tertiary number sequence continuing from the previous card.Entries for particular files may be annotated with statements such as "Destroyed" or "Transferred". Some entries have references to file numbers in the single number file numbering sequence which replaced the multiple number recordkeeping system in 1987, indicating that such files were top numbered into the subsequent system.
