A recent classification and description based on spin-symmetry principles proposes that apart from the well-known established magnetic orders a newly distinct class of magnetic materials called “altermagnets” exists. Altermagnets are a subclass of collinear magnets, which combine antiferromagnetic coupling of neighbouring sublattices with a lifting of Kramers spin degeneracy. Their broken time-reversal symmetry is manifested in first order magneto-transport and magneto-optical phenomena including the anomalous Hall effect, giant magnetoresistance, Kerr rotation and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Going beyond the interesting phenomena intrinsic to altermagnets, the next frontier is the interplay between and coexistence of diverse order parameters, such as charge density waves (CDW), spin density waves (SDW), superconductivity and magnetic/altermagnetic phases. To this aim we propose to investigate the spin and lattice dynamics of the newly discovered altermagnet Co0.25NbSe2 with thermal time of flight spectroscopy.
