VPRS 14520 Villers-Bretonneux School Photograph Collection [Education History Unit]

This collection features items of various formats that document the role of the Education Department and the school children of Victoria in the rebuilding of the school at Villers-Brettoneux, France, after its destruction in 1918. Re-named Victoria College, the Ecole de Garcons (Boys' School) in Villers-Brettoneux was destroyed, along with much of the town during the battle on 25/4/1918 when the Australian 13th and 15th Brigades recaptured it from the Germans in a battle in which over 1200 Australians were killed.Some of the postcards in this series may have been brought back from Villers-Brettoneux by the Director of Education, Frank Tate, who went there as a guest for an official ceremony in the 1920s.
