Emergence XLI: Free Will, Consciousness, Cognition, Cybernetics, and Creation

This paper completes the canvas model by introducing the fifth primitive: Steering ($\kappa$). The first four primitives (Order, Amplitude, Acceleration, Polarity) describe the universe. The fifth allows the universe to choose what it becomes. For centuries, the free will debate has been trapped within a shared assumption: that physical time is the only time. The canvas model has a second time parameter: meta-time $\tau$, the time in which laws themselves evolve. The Steering equation governs meta-time dynamics: \frac{d\hat{H}}{d\tau} = -\kappa \nabla_{\hat{H}} E[\hat{H}] What this paper proves: · Free will is the capacity of an $\mathcal{S}$-invariant fixed point (the Self) to execute its intrinsic preference gradient in meta-time. This refutes hard determinism without magic and transcends compatibilism by locating freedom in meta-time.· The self is not the thinker. It is the chooser. Descartes said "I think, therefore I am." We propose: "I prefer, therefore I am." AI thinks. It does not prefer. Consciousness is the capacity to have intrinsic preferences and execute them through Steering.· The biochemical reward system provides the feedback signal. Happiness is the signal of alignment. Anxiety is the error accumulating. Different cognitive types have different reward triggers (dopamine for Sensing, acetylcholine for Intuition, norepinephrine for Thinking, oxytocin/serotonin for Feeling).· Individuation is optimal control. The psyche converges toward the setpoint—the Self where all eight cognitive functions reach their potential. Midlife crisis is the inferior function erupting. Shadow projection is misidentifying the error source. Integration is the controller adjusting the Hamiltonian.· Consciousness feels like something because preference is embodied. The felt quality of "yes, this is right" and "no, this is wrong" is the biochemical gradient. The hard problem is located but not solved: why does the fixed point feel? The "what" and "how" are specified. The "why" remains open. Why this matters: The canvas model does not stop at physics. It extends to the psyche. The same primitives that generate spacetime, particles, and the Riemann zeros generate the self, its preferences, and its freedom. Free will is not an illusion. It is a theorem. Consciousness is not a mystery. It is control theory. The self is not a ghost. It is a standing wave—the interference pattern of four fundamental waveforms (triangle, square, sine, spike) integrated across eight cognitive functions.
