This study examined the molecular epidemiology of clinical MRSP isolated from Australian animals. Internationally-established and novel MRSP clones are present in Australia. Five main MRSP clones predominate: ST71, ST497, ST316, ST496 and ST45. Geographic clustering of MRSP clones is evident. The level of antimicrobial resistance amongst Australian MRSP varies, depending on clonal type. Successful MRSP clones display higher levels of antimicrobial resistance than singleton clones.
