Magnetic materials featuring a kagome lattice continue to attract a wealth of attention in the condensed matter physics and solid-state chemistry communities. Previously, a range of metal-organic framework S = ½ kagome magnets were found to undergo antiferromagnetic exchange along their organic pillars. Here, we propose to investigate two related systems, where the bidentate pillars investigated previously have been replaced by monodentate organic ligands, thus removing the interlayer covalent linkage and leading to isolated S = ½ kagome planes. We hypothesise that this lack of interlayer pillaring will facilitate exfoliation down to the monolayer limit. To understand how approaching the two-dimensional limit of these layered materials affects their magnetic response, an understanding of their magnetic ground state in the bulk is critical.
