The EU-Forest dataset greatly expands the publicly available information on tree species distributions across Europe by integrating nearly 500,000 tree occurrence records from forest resource surveys conducted in 21 European countries. Its improvements are reflected not only in the substantial increase in the number of occurrence points, but also in a more refined classification system covering more than 200 tree species. All surveys were completed by trained professionals following standard protocols, which ensures the reliability of the dataset. In addition, we carried out technical validation aimed at identifying potential outliers, and assessed its overall biogeographical consistency with recognized ecological knowledge. Although this dataset was initially developed to provide high-quality forest data for European policymakers, we believe that its significant advancements in forest occurrence records, taxonomic refinement, and spatial coverage will benefit multiple fields including forestry, biodiversity conservation, paleoecology, plant ecology, bioeconomy, and pest and disease management.
