16S amplicon sequencing for the diagnosis of drowning

The detection of water-borne bacteria in internal organs such as the spleen or the liver could serve as biomarkers of an active cardiovascular circulation when the lungs fill up with water in case of drowning. In a series of 8 cases, we investigated whether the analysis of the microbiota using 16S amplicon sequencing could provide evidence for the forensic diagnosis of drowning.
