Observation on the bird-dung crab spider Phrynarachne rugosa (Walckenaer, 1805) from South Africa (Araneae: Thomisidae)

The crab spider Phrynarachne rugosa (Walckenaer, 1805) was described as Thomisus rugosus from Réunion but has since been recorded from several African countries. Members of Phrynarachne have strongly modified carapaces and abdomens. Based on photographs of live specimens, the general morphology of the species and variation in colour and shape are discussed. Notes on their behaviour, distribution in South Africa, and conservation are provided.
