A large-scale survey of translators employed at the Swiss Confederation

This survey was designed as part of a year-long research project on the profile and needs of in-house translators working for the language services of the Swiss Confederation. It was distributed in English, French, German, and Italian through an institutional gatekeeper to all language services within the various administrative units ((Federal Chancellery, Parliament, Federal Departments or Departments’ General Secretariat and Federal Offices and administrative units within the Departments). The survey contains a series of open and closed questions concerning: (i) general information about the respondent, such as their unit, target language, and position within the language service (metadata); (ii) background, profiles, and competences; (iii) tasks; (iv) use and perception of translation technologies; and (v) pain points. A total of 217 full responses were collected, representing a response rate of 45%, along with an additional 12 partial responses. This resource includes: (1) a READ-ME file with a detailed description of the resource; (2) the multilingual survey in .docx format; and (3) the anonymised responses of survey participants in .xlsx format.
