The survey is executed by the China Population and Development Research Center. The CMDS (2017) data, released in November 2017, encompasses a nationwide scope covering 31 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The dataset was collected using a stratified, multi-stage, probability-proportional-to-size (PPS) sampling method.
