The Hydrographic Airborne Laser Sounder (HALS) system currently under construction for the Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) incorporates logarithmic amplification for dynamic range compression and a first-difference processing circuit to reduce the volume scattering signal prior to the arrival of the bottom return. These non-linear signal processing steps distort the input waveforms and lead to depth measurement biases whose magnitudes depend on signal strengths, pulse location algorithms, and algorithm parameters. 1982 OTES (Ocean Technology and Engineering Services) Library Public Domain 1930
