The Hydrographic Airborne Laser Sounder (HALS) system currently under construction for the Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) incorporates logarithmic amplification for dynamic range compression and a first-difference processing circuit to reduce the volume scattering signal prior to the arrival of the bottom return.
