Demographic information of midwifery students from the Free School of Obstetrics and Nursing, Mexico City, and the women they assisted, 1920-1935: Data, Postal Addresses, and Geographic Coordinates.

This dataset includes the demographic information of midwifery students enrolled at the Free School of Obstetrics and Nursing from 1920 to 1935 as well as the women whose births some of these students assisted. The documents from which this information was obtained are located in Archivo General de la Nación, collection Secretaría de Educación Pública, subcollection, Dirección Jurídica y de Revalidación, in Mexico City. The contents of each file vary by individual. Each one may contain one or several of the following types of documents: application letters, elementary school education certificates, transcripts or course examination certificates from other previous professional training, endorsement letters by fathers, good behavior letters from employers, nursing practices lists, ELOE course tests, clinical histories, degree revalidation requests, official SEP correspondence, among others. Authors used application letters and clinical histories for this dataset. Two spreadsheets include the geographic coordinates associated with the postal addresses of both the midwifery students and the women they assisted. Coordinates were not originally included in the historical documents. The authors of this dataset generated the coordinates following the methodology described in the included "Data biography" file (.docx). The dataset is divided in two CSV files, one for the students and the other one for the birthing women. Dr. Stephanie Insalaco (Southwestern University) and Clare Stauber (Southwestern University) used this dataset to create maps in ArcGIS.
