The genome of Paracoccus sp. C13 was sequenced due to intense production of a siderophore by this strain. Analysis of the genome allowed identification of the respective gene cluster for siderophore production and subsequent expression analysis. The siderophore production of strain C13 is likely of importance for interaction with its host, the brown alga Fucus spiralis, and other bacteria of the same microbiome, which may partially benefit by cheating.
