Endophytism and ectomycorrhiza, an overlooked dual ecological niche? Insights from Russula spp. and natural environments.

The ecological plasticity of fungi is more and more acknowledged. Here we investigated whether roots of non-ectomycorrhizal (EcM) plants are colonized by ectomycorrhizal fungi. To do so, we collected healthy roots of non-EcM plants in several sites in France to characterize their mycobiota. Furthermore, in two sites, we collected rhizospheric soil along with roots to identify a potential root filter.
