Two Dutch peatlands were visited (Fochteloërveen and Ilperveld) from which 2 Sphagnum species (S. fallax and S. palustre ) were sampled. Both mosses were subsequently separated in capitulum (0-3 cm) and stem (3-6 cm). Nitrogen fixation and methane oxidation activity were quantified using stable isotopes (15N-N2 and 13C-CH4). The microbial community living in and on Sphagnum mosses was investigated using a 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing approach. By relating environmental parameters and activity to the bacterial community, bacterial classes could be identified relating to different conditions.
