Runoff Evaluation in an Earth System Land Model for Permafrost Regions: Input, Output, and Source Code for Simulations Using the Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS)

This dataset contains all materials necessary to reproduce the numerical simulations performed using the Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS) for the study Runoff Evaluation in an Earth System Land Model for Permafrost Regions submitted to the journal Geoscientific Model Development (DOI: 10.5194/egusphere-2025-1753). It includes the full ATS source code version-1.5, input XML files, meshes, forcings for ATS runs, and output files from ATS runs which were used for analysis in this paper. In this study, the Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS) was used to simulate dynamic permafrost processes at 23 hillslope sites within the Sagavanirktok (Sag) River Basin, located in the North Slope of Alaska. These hillslope sites were randomly selected from all available hillslopes in the basin, based on the slope gradient ranging from 1 to 9 degrees. All data are organized by simulation case to ensure reproducibility. Specifically, these files include: 1. ats-1.5.0.tar.gz is the source code of ATS v-1.5 used for hillslope simulations in this paper.2. ATS_runs_inputs_outputs.zip includes all inputs and outputs of hillslope simulations (23 hillslope models in total). Specifically, it includes:(1) ATS_runs_inputs_outputs/huc/19060402/daymet/real/hillslope_ID.h5: forcing data for hillslope_ID, where ID denotes the ID for each hillslope. These forcings were fetched from ORNL Daymet data product (https://daymet.ornl.gov/) by latitude and longitude of each hillslope.(2) ATS_runs_inputs_outputs/huc/19060402/mesh/hillslope_ID.exo: mesh file for hillslope_ID, where ID denotes the ID for each hillslope.(3) ATS_runs_inputs_outputs/huc19060402_ats1p5/model_03-hillslope_spinup/hillslope_spinup_ID/checkpoint_final.h5: initial condition file to start transient simulation for hillslope_ID, where ID denotes the ID for each hillslope.(4) ATS_runs_inputs_outputs/huc19060402_ats1p5/model_04-hillslope_transient/hillslope_transient_ID.xml: ATS input file for hillslope_ID, where ID denotes the ID for each hillslope.(5) ATS_runs_inputs_outputs/huc19060402_ats1p5/model_04-hillslope_transient/hillslope_transient_ID/observation.data: ATS output for hillslope_ID, where ID denotes the ID for each hillslope. All data and files are organized using their original relative paths as used during the simulations, ensuring the setup can be reproduced without path modification.
