资源简介:
Periodontal disease, characterized by loss of tissue attachment and alveolar bone, necessitates effective intervention strategies targeting pathogenic bacteria in periodontal pockets. Traditional mechanical cleaning often fails to eliminate bacterial colonies, prompting the exploration of supplementary antimicrobial treatments. This study investigated the efficacy of a registered medical device, namely PMA-Zeolite, on microbial colonization in patients with chronic periodontitis through a prospective, randomized, controlled trial. Sixty-seven participants (37 treatment, 22 control) received either PMA-Zeolite treatment or standard prophylaxis for 10 weeks, aiming to evaluate changes in pocket depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP), and plaque index (API). Clinical assessments and microbial samples were obtained before treatment, weekly throughout the intervention, and during follow-up at 12 weeks. Microbiome analysis utilized next-generation sequencing to evaluate shifts in bacterial diversity correlating with clinical outcomes. Preliminary results indicate that PMA-Zeolite significantly affected PD and BoP, with expected disparities in microbial diversity compared to controls. This suggests a potential mechanism by which PMA-Zeolite enhances traditional periodontal therapy, presenting a potential as an adjuvant in periodontal therapy. Continued research is warranted to refine treatment protocols that mitigate biofilm formation and inflammation without adverse effects, ultimately optimizing outcomes for patients suffering from chronic periodontitis. These findings highlight the need for integrating novel therapies in managing periodontal disease while responding to the challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
