Sewage sludge on agricultural land

Sewage sludge contains phosphorus and nitrogen that can be reused as manure in agricultural activities. However, sewage sludge also contains impurities, such as heavy metals. The use of sewage sludge on agricultural land is regulated by the EU Sludge Directive (86/278/EEC) and SNFS 1994:2 and Section 20 of SFS 1998:944. Sweden needs to report to the EU on compliance with these rules. Reporting requirements have varied. As of autumn 2023, Sweden needs to annually compile and make available data on how much sewage sludge was produced in the country the previous year, how much of this sewage sludge was used as manure on agricultural land, average concentrations of certain heavy metals in the sewage sludge used on agricultural land, and the locations where the sewage sludge was used on agricultural land. This dataset contains data on the places where sewage sludge was used on Swedish agricultural land in the previous calendar year.
