Metformin is the fourth most prescribed medication in the world. While drug is commonly used to treat Type II diabetes, it also has anti-aging and anti cancer properties. Due to its widespread use, this drug have been found in rivers and coastal waters at concerning levels. The goal of this study was to characterize metformin degrading bacteria isolated from activated sludge and investigate the biochemical pathways involved in the metabolism of this drug.
