Group 2 capsular polysaccharides serve as precursors to valuable glycosaminoglycan pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals such as heparin, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate. Escherichia coli strains endogenously producing group 2 capsular polysaccharides can serve as microbial factories for overproduction of these valuable compounds. The genome sequences will be used to construct metabolic models to assist in prediction of metabolic engineering targets.
