Survey results on subjective safety in road traffic

Study on subjective safety in cycling - results and data set of a survey with over 21,000 participants. So far, there are hardly any surveys as to which types of roads, cycle paths and intersections the traffic participants subjectively perceive as safe. In particular, there are hardly any studies to date on the differentiated consideration of linked features, such as the guide shape of the bicycle traffic system (RVA), design, width and the situation on the left and right of the RVA. Are bicycle lanes with barrier posts (pollers) the best solution to reduce the perceived conflict between car and bicycle or are sufficiently wide bicycle lanes decisive? What effect does the colouring of wheel strips have? Under what conditions is the guidance in the side compartment or on the roadway perceived as safer? In order to reduce this research gap, FixMyCity developed the “Straßencheck” survey and conducted it together with Tagesspiegel Berlin. Based on 3D images, 1,900 different road situations were evaluated by more than 21,000 participants. The underlying classification system for the classification of road cross-sections and their characteristic characteristics now allows the influencing variables of individual features, such as RVA width, surface, structural separation, right-side parking, etc., to be analyzed in the evaluation. It was also possible to gain insights into differences in the perception of safety of different user groups and the perspective of motorists and pedestrians.
