The genome of the oral commensal Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus salivarius M18 was sequenced in order to examine gene content, discover any new antimicrobial-encoding (bacteriocin) genes and to determine if the strain is suitable for oral probiotic development. The genome will be used for comparative genomics and for use as a basis for functional genomics.
