original_data.xlsx The file contains 27,445 curated entries for the preferred bird orientation based on scratched papers from Emlen funnels [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. The raw digital data of studies dating from 2009 to 2023 were gathered and merged to all conform to the same formatting. The data set includes the following information: 1. RingID: the identifier of each individual bird (numbered colour rings) 2. Species: the bird species (ER = European robins; BC = Eurasian blackcaps) 3. Condition: the magnetic field condition of the experiments (NMF = Normal Magnetic field, basically identical to the geomagnetic field; CMF = changed magnetic field, where magnetic North is turned by 120° counterclockwise) 4. Orientation: the preferred bird orientation evaluated relative to geographic North in degrees 5. Activity (act): categorical description of how many scratches the bird left on the paper (0: <30 scratches, 1: 30-100 scratches, 2: 100-200 scratches, 3: 200-300 scratches, 4: 300+ scratches) 6. Concentration (con): how concentrated the scratches were on the paper (when estimating the orientation, we start by encompassing an area that contains more than 50% of the scratches; if that area is >90°, the concentration score is 1; 2: 45°-90°; 3: 22.5°-45°; 4: 11.25°-22.5°) 7.
