The experiments for this study took place at an agricultural station in Eryuan County, Erhai River Basin, Yunnan province, China. The area has a north subtropical plateau monsoon climate, with a mean annual temperature of 13.9 oC and an accumulative annual precipitation of 745 mm. The dry and rainy seasons are distinct: the dry season mostly occurs over winter and spring and the rainy season in summer and autumn. The soils in our test agricultural lands are typical paddy soils (classified as anthrosols according to the WRB soil classification system), and the agricultural mode is rape-rice rotation.
