<div style='text-align:Left;'><div><div><p>For more than 150 years, the coal regions of eastern and western Kentucky have been subject to widespread mining. Underground (deep) mining was the dominant mining technique until the 1950s, when the development of large-scale excavation and transportation equipment made surface (strip) mining more efficient.</p><p><span>This dataset provides a geographic inventory of available coal mine maps in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Each polygon indicates the overall bounds of all maps available for a specific mine. Clicking on a polygon will present a pop-up with a link to individual maps that can be downloaded from the Kentucky Mine Mapping Information System at </span><a target='_blank' href='https://minemaps.ky.gov' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'><span>https://minemaps.ky.gov</span></a>. Maps from this website can be downloaded in formats such as GeoTIFF or printed as PDF.</p></div></div></div>
