Climate change report 2011

In its 2011 Climate Action Report, the Federal Environment Agency analyses the trend in greenhouse gas emissions in Austria from 1990 to 2009 and compares these with the objectives of the Austrian Climate Strategy. In 2009, the second year of the Kyoto commitment period, greenhouse gas emissions were 80.1 million tonnes. The use of flexible mechanisms, taking into account emissions trading as well as effects from new forestation and deforestation, results in a calculated target deviation of around 5.0 million tonnes for 2009. An estimate for the whole period 2008-2012 suggests a gap of approximately 30 million tonnes. In order to fulfil the commitment of the Kyoto Protocol and in view of the 2020 targets, the implementation of further domestic reduction measures and an additional use of flexible instruments are particularly necessary.
