Tetrahymena deletes 34% of germline genome from somatic genome during conjugation. A recent study showed that Lia3p is a binding protein of certain G-rich sequences. LIA3-deficient cells produced fewer progeny cells that also sustained the loss of deletion boundary precision. We used LIA3-deficient strains to investigate the mechanism of deletion boundary determination in Tetrahymena thermophila.
