In this study, the wildflower Mimulus verbenaceus (Phrymaceae) is used as a model to explore the genetic basis and developmental mechanisms that underlie a recently emerged phenotypic novelty, a mediolateral foliar anthocyanin stripe. The main objectives of this study were: (i) to identify the causal gene triggering the emergence of the novel stripe by analyzing both population samples collected in the wild and inbred lines generated in the laboratory; (ii) to test the hypothesis that a hidden developmental prepattern potentiates the ultimate emergence of the novel stripe pattern using chemical mutagenesis; and, (iii) to explore the evolutionary forces driving the maintenance of this novel phenotype in nature by population genomics analysis.
