We reconstructed the backbone phylogeny of Lamioideae using 80 plastid-encoded protein genes (dataset CP80), with plastomes from two individuals of <em>M. sagittatum</em>, 12 species of <em>Phlomoides</em> Moench, one species of <em>Phlomis</em> L., two species of <em>Paraphlomis</em> (Prain) Prain, and one species of <em>Betonica</em> were newly sequenced for this study, and the remaining 43 accessions downloaded from GenBank. As indicated by the first set of analyses, <em>Metastachydium</em> is deeply nested within genus <em>Phlomoides</em> of Phlomideae, which guided the second set of analyses. Therefore, we clarified the position of <em>Metastachydium</em> within <em>Phlomoides</em>. Two datasets were constructed for this step. The first dataset included eight plastid DNA regions (<em>atpB-rbcL</em>, <em>psbA-trnH</em>, <em>rpl16</em>, <em>rpl32</em>-<em>trnL</em>, <em>rps16</em>, <em>trnL-trnF</em>, <em>trnT</em>-<em>trnL</em>, and <em>trnK</em>; dataset CP8), while the second dataset consisted of nrITS.
