Seasonal changes and age-related effects on the intestinal mi-crobiota of Captive Chinese monals (Lophophorus lhuysii)

This study investigated the gut microbiota of captive Chinese monals in different seasons and age groups. It was found that the compositions of the gut microbiota are significantly influenced by seasonal changes and age, with significantly beta diversity across the four seasons. Different biomarkers were identified at different seasons and age groups, with the highest number found in the winter and mid-aged adults. Meanwhile, the spring and summer were speculated to be more susceptible to disease infections. This study reveals how the gut microbiota is affected by seasonal cycle and age, providing fundamental information on the gut microbiota of captive Chinese monals and aiding in their better conservation and management of captive populations.
