The density of the jejunal nerve fibres in the submucous plexus myenteric plexus areas and villous tissue.

The mucosal formations in the jejunum and ileum were counted by PGP 9.5 immunoreactivity in each section in order to estimate the parasite burden. A total of 10 well-oriented villus-crypt units (VCU) were counted. The parasite burden was expressed as the number of parasites per millimeter of villus. For PGP 9.5 immunoreactivity a similar experimental protocol was used as previously described in the materials and methods section. A total of 3 time periods were used namely, day 14, 37 and 50 post-infection.
