HIGHLIGHTS (1) The pore structure parameters of deep coal-rock in the study area were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, gas adsorption and high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry. (2) Macro- and micropores dominate the pore volume distribution, while micropores constitute the primary component of specific surface area. (3) The relative influence of pore structure parameters on methane adsorption decreases in the following order: micropore volume > micropore specific surface area > mesopore specific surface area > mesopore volume > micropore fractal dimension > mesopore fractal dimension > macropore-related parameters.
