Zambia (2013): Formative Assessment of HIV and Size Estimation using Census and Enumeration methods among key populations most at Risk of HIV and Integrated Biological and Behaviour Survey among Female Sex Workers in Zambia.

The overall purpose of the study is to identify and recruit the Most at Risk Populations (MARPs), describe characteristics of these populations which place them at risk, collect information to better understand networks, sexual preferences and practices, and estimate population sizes to better understand the extent to which these populations contribute to the HIV epidemic in Zambia. To meet this overall objective, the protocol proposed to conduct formative assessments and population size estimation among four priority MARPs in Zambia - (1) sex workers; (2) Clients of sex workers; and (3) men who have sex with men; and (4) injecting and non-injecting drug users. An integrated biological-behavioral survey among female sex workers was also proposed to be part of this survey. The formative assessments and estimations of population size will be conducted in 10 sites targeting a sample of between 300 and 500 sex workers and their clients, five sites for MSM and 5 sites for drug users. A detailed description of the data collection methodology is clearly outlined in the study protocol.
