Regional corpus sizing in OpenAlex and Web of Science: Southern Argentine Patagonia and the Spanish Mediterranean Arc, 2015–2024

Scripts, configuration, query logs and results of a preparatory count establishing the order of magnitude of two regional research corpora and the share of each published in Spanish: Southern Argentine Patagonia and the Spanish Mediterranean Arc, 2015–2024. Two institutional sets are used. The volume set, queried in OpenAlex only, covers 97 institutions: in the Mediterranean Arc, 26 public universities and 63 CSIC institutes; in Southern Argentine Patagonia, 3 national universities and 5 CONICET centres. It holds 663,906 and 6,611 records respectively, of which 110,669 and 1,666 are in Spanish — some 112,000 Spanish-language records across the two regions. The coverage set pairs OpenAlex with Web of Science cell by cell over universities only, 25 in the Arc and 3 in Patagonia: Web of Science indexes 81.71 % of what OpenAlex holds for the Arc and 38.30 % for Patagonia, falling to 54.24 % and 30.95 % for output published in Spanish. Institutional enumeration for CSIC and CONICET used the ROR parent/child relationship graph rather than text search. The deposit includes two independent implementations of the counting logic (Node.js and Python), the 250 API calls executed, every inclusion and exclusion decision — including why UNIA is included in the volume set but not in the coverage set — and the documented limitations: inferred versus declared language, affiliation-resolution failures for Argentine entities, and the union/sum gap. It is a feasibility check for a research proposal, not a research result.
