101 newlywed couples completed large packets of questionnaires and attended a lab session where they engaged in problem-solving discussions and reaction time tasks at Baseline, 12 months after Baseline, and 24 months after Baseline. They also completed short packets of questionnaires at four month intervals between those yearly assessments. Questionnaires assessed the following variables (see uploaded measure list for more information about scales used, whether each variable was also assessed in the short packets, etc..): Demographics, Marital Satisfaction, Expectations of Marital Satisfaction, Marital Problems, Expectations of Marital Problems, Power, Tendency to engage in partner regulation behaviors, Intimate Partner Violence, Equity, Tendency to Forgive, Relationship self-efficacy, Relationship attributions, Big Five personality, Sexual satisfaction, Attitudes toward Unconventional Sex, Depression, Self-esteem, Constraint, Gratitude, Relational self-construal, Motivation to resolve problems, Chronic stress, Commitment, Satisfaction, Alternatives, Investments, Attachment, Mindfulness, Self-compassion , Relational Distraction, Distress Tolerance , Shyness , Emotional suppression , Self-control, Jealousy, Approach avoidance relationship goals, Social Desirability Scale , Implicit theories of relationships (destiny / growth), Bem's masculinity/feminity scales, sociosexual orientation, Attention to alternatives, Implicit attitudes toward letters (partner name), Frequency of Sexual Behavior, Desire for Sexual Frequency, Extradyadic romantic behavior, Sexual Awareness, Weight, Pregnancy, Birth control, Menstruation We also included "partner versions" of many of the scales that assessed participants' perceptions of their partners (e.g., a partner version of commitment asked participants to estimate their partners' commitment). See the uploaded measure list for information about what variables also included partner version scales. Participants were 101 newlywed couples (93 heterosexual couples, 7 lesbian couples, 1 gay couple). Husbands were 32.66 years old (SD = 8.72) on average and had received 16.17 years (SD = 3.02) of education. Sixty-two percent were White or Caucasian, 28% were Black or African American, and the remaining 9% were another or two or more ethnicities. Forty-six percent were Christian, 34% were agnostic, atheist, or reported that they were not religious, and the remaining 20% reported another religious affiliation. Seventy-six percent were employed full time and 12% were full-time students. Wives were 32.08 years old (SD = 8.74) on average and had received 17.54 years (SD = 2.61) of education. Sixty-five percent were White or Caucasian, 26% were Black or African American, and the remaining 11% were another or two or more ethnicities. Forty-five percent were Christian, 33% were agnostic, atheist, or reported that they were not religious, and the remaining 22% reported another religious affiliation. Sixty-five percent were employed full time and 13% were full-time students. All procedures were approved by the Institutional Review Board at Institutional Review Board at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro [#15-0368].
