2010年～2024年 日本における震度5以上の地震発生回数

2023年、気象庁が定める震度5以上の地震は日本で6回発生しています。気象庁の震度階級は、地震の揺れの強弱を表す指標で、観測地点での揺れ（地震動）を計測します。震度階級は、10段階に分かれており、大きい数字ほど強い震度であることを意味します。 
日本における地震活動 
日本列島は、複数のプレートが重なり合う「環太平洋火山帯」上に位置しており、地震や火山噴火による災害が発生しやすい地域です。また、四方を海に囲まれた日本では、地震の発生とともに津波も発生しやすくなっています。日本政府はこうした災害の予防策として、多額の防災関係予算をつぎこんでいます。政府は、スマートフォンに通知が送られる地震警報システムや緊急避難施設、住宅・建築物の耐震化などに投資を行っています。 
2011年の東日本大震災 
2011年に発生した東日本大震災（東北地方太平洋沖地震）は、日本史上最多の被害総額を記録した自然災害であり、日本の歴史上最も多くの犠牲者を出した自然災害となっています。気象庁は、2011年に震度5以上の地震を30回以上記録しており、それらの多くは、東日本大震災の余震であったと考えられています。津波による被害は地震の被害よりも深刻で、多くの町が破壊されたほか、1万5千人を超える犠牲者が出ています。また、福島第一原子力発電所の3つの原子炉がメルトダウンを起こす事態にもつながりました。 

In 2023, there have been six earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher recorded in Japan, as determined by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The Japan Meteorological Agency's seismic intensity scale is an indicator that expresses the intensity of seismic tremors, measuring the tremors (seismic motion) at the observation site. The seismic intensity scale is divided into ten levels, with higher numbers indicating stronger intensities.

Earthquake Activity in Japan
Japan lies on the 'Ring of Fire', a region where multiple tectonic plates overlap, making it a prone area for disasters caused by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Moreover, surrounded by seas on all sides, Japan is susceptible to tsunamis along with earthquakes. The Japanese government has allocated substantial disaster prevention budgets in response to such disasters, investing in earthquake warning systems that send notifications to smartphones, emergency evacuation facilities, and the seismic strengthening of residential and buildings.

2011 East Japan Earthquake
The 2011 East Japan Earthquake (Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake), which occurred in 2011, is the natural disaster with the highest total damage cost in Japanese history and has resulted in the greatest number of casualties from a natural disaster in Japan's history. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded more than 30 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in 2011, many of which are believed to have been aftershocks of the East Japan Earthquake. The damage caused by the tsunami was more severe than that caused by the earthquake, with many towns destroyed and over 15,000 casualties. Additionally, the incident led to the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
