Metaphor types and metaphor translation strategies: a case study of the Netflix series “Wednesday”

This study aims to investigate the types of metaphors and metaphor translation strategies, including their frequency, found in Netflix's “Wednesday” series, focusing on the first four episodes. The exploration of metaphor types relies on Ullman's (1972) framework, which identifies four types of metaphors: anthropomorphic, animal, synesthetic, and concrete-to-abstract. The results showed that the most common type of metaphor was concrete-to-abstract. For metaphor translation strategies, the analysis was based on Larson's (1984) framework, which presents five strategies. The English-to-Thai subtitles of the series were analyzed, and the results indicated that Strategy 1—retaining the metaphorical image of the source language in the target language—was the most frequently used. These findings suggest that the translator prioritizes maintaining the audience's understanding and the natural equivalence of the source language message in the translated text.
