Exergy-Floor Atlas & Exergy-Distribution Dataset

Exergy-Floor Atlas & Exergy-Distribution Dataset (v1.0, 2020 vintage) A per-country dataset of energy dignity in a physical unit — useful exergy, the fraction of energy that actually performs work in a human life (the warmth in a home, the light to read by, the motion of a wheel). For 149 countries (2020 vintage) it reports two quantities that need no currency conversion or purchasing-power adjustment: (i) the share of each country's population below a dignity floor of 4.6 GJ useful exergy per capita per year, and (ii) the within-country Gini of useful exergy. It is built only from openly licensed, peer-reviewed sources — the CL-PFU energy-and-exergy database (Brockway et al. 2024) for the national-mean level and the Oswald et al. (2020) energy-footprint distributions for the within-country shape — and regenerates from a single deterministic command. Headline readings: about 48% of people (≈3.7 billion) live below the floor; 43 countries average below it; the span from the lowest to the highest country is about 159×, on one identical physical floor. The within-country distribution is reported as an honest cross-construction band [0.59, 0.71], and every value carries its honesty flags (quintile grouping ⇒ Ginis are lower bounds; 119 of 149 shapes are pooled and flagged). This is v1.0 of a DOI-versioned living observatory, released under CC BY 4.0. It is the open data layer behind Valencia (2026), A Dignified Floor in Useful Exergy (companion paper, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20715094), and the synthesis book The Useful Floor: A Physics of Dignity (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.21823546).
