Since the early 1970s the European Commission´s Standard & Special Eurobarometer are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries. Principal investigators are the Directorate-General Communication and on occasion other departments of the European Commission or the European Parliament. Over time, candidate and accession countries were included in the Standard Eurobarometer Series. Selected questions or modules may not have been surveyed in each sample. Please consult the basic questionnaire for more information on country filter instructions or other questionnaire routing filters. In this study the following modules are included: 1. Women in the European Union.<br>Topics: 1. Women in the European Union: preferred measures to reduce the income differences between women and men; negative impact of maternity leave on women´s careers; attitude towards the planned unification of the length of maternity leave to 20 weeks on full pay in all EU Member States; preferred future model of maternity leave in the own country (extension at lower pay or a shorter maternity leave with full pay); in countries without parental leave was asked: (only men) interest in a parental leave; conditions of parental leave; only women: encouragement of the partner on parental leave; men only: preferred measures to better align private and working life for Europeans; reasons for the unsafe working conditions of women in the EU; assessment of relevant obstacles for women in achieving top positions in political parties, in public administration, in large companies, in medium-sized enterprises and social organizations; most appropriate measures to guarantee women´s access to leadership positions in business and administration (legal quotas, etc.); reasons for the underrepresentation of women in politics; best measures to promote the representation of women in politics; reasons for lack of intent to participate in the upcoming local, national and European elections; attitudes towards the expansion of a contact ban from one EU country to all EU countries to protect victims of violence; preferred European strategy to prevent violence against women.
Demography: nationality; left-right self-placement; family situation and marital status; age at end of education; sex; age; occupation; professional position; type of community; household composition and household size; financial difficulties during the last year; self-rated social position (scale).
Also encoded was: date of interview; beginning of interview; duration of interview; persons present during the interview; willingness to cooperate; city size; region; country; language of the interview (only in Luxembourg, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Malta).
