Some neonates never become colonized with S. aureus in the nares, while others become colonized with S. aureus. After installation of a topical intranasal antibiotic, some neonates clear colonization while others become recolonized with S. aureus. For this study, we conducted 16S rRNA sequencing of the nasal microbiome using longitudinal samples from S. aureus colonized and non-colonized patients in the neonatal intensive care unit.
