The aim of the essay is to reconstruct the evolution of Pasolini's narrative work, from his Friulian years to his still best-known novels, Ragazzi di vita (1955) and Una vita violenta (1959), up to the unfinished Petrolio, written in the last years of his life, published in 1992 and republished in 2022 with new material. Some thematic and stylistic constants (e.g. the fragment, the unfinished) persist, changed but lasting, throughout his experience as a narrator or "failed" novelist.
