Spirituality and Health Summer Internship Program - Primary Data

Despite the significant role of spirituality in patient experiences, and unmet patient desires for spiritual care, training in spirituality and spiritual care is limited in undergraduate and graduate medical education. A potentially novel, but unexplored approach for addressing these gaps in medical student training is an immersive, experiential internship focused patient spirituality and spiritual care based on pedagogical approaches adapted from clinical pastoral education (CPE). Mixed method analyses were therefore undertaken of participant pre- and post-program surveys and comments to assess the first five years of a six-week spirituality and health summer internship program, modeled on a unit of CPE, for first year medical students. Attached are the primary data that were the bases for the analyses.
